Maya Swati Devi’s introduction

From my two great passions, Tantrism and Indian Dance, a book is born, a wholehearted tale written in a poetic form as a dialogue that started within me and expanded infinitely.

Dance and Tantrism are two paths I have been following since an early age and they have guided every step and choice in my life. Tantrism is a ‘female path’ and this book is my tribute to the Great Goddess.
My goal is to tell my own personal and real experience of the tantric path and of dance in a magical and spiritual land, from when I first set foot in India.

This book is not autobiographical but narrative and reflects the evolutionary path that brought me close to the Supreme Śakti, who manifested herself in her various forms.
It has been an inner journey that has led me to interact with many ancient souls, friends, masters, researchers, or simple companions of life. Fundamental to me was the research based on my body experience, which started very early on, through dance and yoga. Over the years learning from great spiritual masters the purest dancers in India, has enabled me to become a “dancing Yoginī”.

My spiritual researches led me to the knowledge of the Great Mother and to have an intense experience of her through the intimate listening of my body. Through an intense spiritual journey, I have managed to put into practice and transform the main concepts of the ancient knowledge of Tantra and the devotional path of pure and mystical dances.

This book is the tale of an inward spiritual quest, which has been going on for almost twenty years and started, perhaps, when I first put my foot on this earth, reincarnated in a woman’s body. It tells about an unfinished path that derives from my past lives.

My intention is to share with the reader the evolution that has taken place in my “Self” through the truth of such a profound and complex spiritual path as Tantrism, and the mystical and pure dances that lead to the union with the divine.

It tells of a journey through the deepest nature of things that intertwined with the lives of the many ancient souls I have encountered on this earth.
Fragments of experiences, impressions of life appear on a white canvas that still today and every day of my life is waiting to be completed and painted by my choices and actions.
This is the way I chose to communicate with the divine, the path of supreme wisdom, the upheaval of ordinary reality, in which pure and impure, asceticism and carnal union join in a non-dual embrace to represent the absolute that exists in each one of us.
This is a path that fills my heart in this earthly life and in life beyond death.
Historical research has been done by the Oḍissī dancer Lucrezia Ottoboni, a dancing soul I met and found in this life. Her research explores the meaning of the Great Mother and her ten cosmic forces: the Daśa Mahāvidyā, the Yoginī and the places related to the workshop of the divine feminine.
